Common questions about senior support and this site
Short answers first, then a link to the fuller guide or official local route.
What does Senior Support Finder do?
We signpost older people, unpaid carers and families to trusted council, GOV.UK, NHS (where relevant) and charity starting points in plain English. We do not decide eligibility or replace official advice.
About the siteHow do I check which senior benefits might be worth looking at?
Start with Pension Credit and Attendance Allowance on GOV.UK, then check your local Council Tax Reduction page. Our benefits guide walks through that order.
Benefits entitlement guideWhat is Attendance Allowance?
Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help or supervision because of illness or disability. It is claimed nationally; home ownership alone does not usually stop a claim.
Attendance Allowance topicWhat is Pension Credit?
Pension Credit can top up income for people over State Pension age and may unlock other help. Savings can affect it, so use the official GOV.UK check rather than guessing.
Pension Credit topicIs Council Tax Reduction different in each area?
Yes. Each council runs its own scheme. Always use the Council Tax Reduction page for the address where the older person lives.
Council Tax Reduction topicHow do Blue Badge applications work?
Applications usually start on GOV.UK and are assessed by the local authority. Describe walking distance, pain, breathlessness, hidden conditions or safety risks clearly.
Blue Badge guideWhat is a carer's assessment?
It is a conversation with the local authority about how unpaid caring affects your life — health, work, sleep and whether you can continue. You do not always need to live with the person you support.
Carer's assessment guideWhat is a Disabled Facilities Grant?
It is local authority help that may fund major home adaptations such as safer bathing, stair access or doorway changes. Smaller equipment can be a separate route.
DFG step-by-step guideHow should I prepare before contacting my council?
Write down the practical problems, gather National Insurance details, recent bills and a short list of what has changed. Our preparation guide covers what to have ready.
Prepare for council contactCan I find support for a specific town or borough?
Yes. Browse the locations directory for reviewed local hubs with council and charity links. Start with the need that is most urgent: money, care, mobility, adaptations or carer strain.
Browse locationsDoes the support checker collect personal data?
No. The checker asks anonymous questions and points you toward categories, guides and local pages. It does not decide entitlement.
Try the support checkerHow do you choose sources?
We prefer official council, GOV.UK and recognised charity pages, review links before publishing local pages, and remind visitors to confirm details with the original source.
How we choose sourcesDo you show adverts?
We may show Google AdSense adverts to help fund the free service, only after you accept optional advertising cookies. Ads do not change our signposting purpose. See the Privacy Policy for details.
