Loneliness, Day Centres and Community Support

How older people and families can find companionship, activities and local community support.

Updated 2026

Why loneliness is a support issue

Loneliness can affect health, confidence and willingness to accept other help. For some people, a lunch club, day centre, befriending service or transport support makes other care easier to accept.

It is worth naming loneliness clearly when speaking to councils, GPs or charities.

Where to look locally

Age UK branches, community centres, faith groups, libraries, dementia cafes and council community directories are common starting points. Availability varies widely by area.

Ask about accessibility, transport, cost, booking and whether a referral is needed.

Combine with practical support

Community support works best alongside practical help where needed: benefits checks, home safety, carers breaks or adult social care. Do not treat social connection as a replacement for unmet care needs.
